Environment, Health, and Safety
At Cambrex, our firm commitment to health, safety, and environmental sustainability underpins everything we do. We prioritize the well-being of our employees, customers, communities, and all those impacted by our activities and products. We adhere to the highest safety standards and operate preventively to avoid accidents and injuries.
As an integral part of every community in which we operate, we’ve established well-developed risk assessment methods that focus on safely handling and manufacturing our products. These include:
- Risk management programs like ChemStewards® (for US facilities) and Responsible Care® (for European facilities)
- Formal safety reviews before manufacture
- Toxicological risk assessments for all new process introductions
- Extensive safety training programs for employees and contractors
- Use of engineering controls like isolator and barrier technology for potent compound handling
- Hosting an Annual Safety Day for all employees
Our vision is to achieve zero workplace accidents, and we continually focus on improving our safety metrics to make that vision a reality.
At Cambrex, we promote strict environmental compliance and environmentally friendly initiatives at every facility. Each site has programs for reducing emissions and advancing sustainability, and we’re fully committed to continuous improvement in our environmental performance. Our efforts to find the most eco-friendly synthetic routes and processes include sustainable chemistry, advanced wastewater treatment methods and facilities, safe waste handling and management, periodically audited waste disposal facilities, and a commitment to emission reduction. We’re also REACH-compliant.

Sustainability
As part of our commitment to transparency, Cambrex reports our decarbonization efforts annually to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a leading platform for reporting on climate impact that scores the maturity of ESG programs. The Cambrex CDP Climate score for 2024 was D, following a 2023 Climate score of C-. We believe the decline in score was a result of new essentials category requirements being applied to the C scoring category, which have been addressed in our 2025 submittal. Our expectation is that we will again be scored in the C category in 2025, which is the average Biotech Industry score. Cambrex is proud to share that for 2024, we have a number of subcategory scores in the B and A- categories.
Cambrex was scored for the first time in the water category and received a C scoring in 2024.
In both climate and water areas, we are engaged in carbon and water reduction programs at our manufacturing facilities. In 2025, we also had Science Based Targets validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative to achieve carbon reduction targets by 2030. More information on our Global commitments is contained in our Corporate Social Responsibility Policy.
Cambrex is also actively engaged in Sustainability with its customers and suppliers through implementation of a Supplier Code of Conduct. This is aligned with the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative (PSCI). More information on our programs can be found in the Cambrex Supplier Code of Conduct.
