Position Summary:

This position is responsible for administering all human resources services including department leadership, recruiting, policy and procedure, employee development, employee relations and all other areas of HR. The Director, Human Resources advises the Cambrex Charles City (CCC) leadership team to ensure that HR policies, procedures and programs all reflect the company philosophy.


Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:



  • Plans, organizes, and leads all activities of the CCC HR department
  • Serves as strategic advisor to Site Director and CCC site leadership team on all matters regarding HR policies, procedures, and practice.
  • Evaluates results of department in relation to established goals; recommends new approaches to effect continual improvements in efficiency and services performed.
  • Strong analytical skills; ability to organize and analyze data in order to develop and implement solutions and/or recommendations to identify the root cause and mitigate risks, while continuously improving key performance indicators


Policy & Procedure

  • Conducts regular reviews of and makes recommendations to Cambrex Corporate and CCC’s leadership team for improvement of policies, procedures, and practices in support of company goals and objectives
  • Ensures legal requirements are met to reduce exposure to liability for the company; manages employee complaint and litigation processes
  • Provides guidance and support in administering human resources policies and procedures to ensure that employee relations concerns and conduct issues are resolved in a timely, fair, and responsive manner
  • Develops and maintains affirmative action program; maintains other records, reports and logs to conform to EEO regulations


Employee Development

  • Ensures that a well-developed and current succession plan is in place, with a focus on CCC’s future and vision, to avoid vacancies in key positions
  • Delivers solutions associated with a coaching culture for employee development
  • Manages the leadership development process, with priority on developing CCC leader’s and future leaders’ attributes and competencies
  • Ensures proper training and development for CCC employees, including continuing education



  • Develops labor plan in conjunction with the site leadership team, providing strategy for recruiting key talent to the site
  • Conducts recruitment effort for all exempt and nonexempt personnel; serves point of contact for external recruiters
  • Coordinates job posting activity, interview processes, and new employee orientations



  • Updates annual staffing plan, and ensures positions and job descriptions are accurate, evaluated, and market priced on a consistent basis
  • Works in conjunction with HR Operations to ensure the performance management process has appropriate tools, education and compliance
  • Partners with the leadership team to ensure all salary reviews and bonus administration are coordinated and timely



  • Ensures consistent flow of company news, updates and strategies to employees at all levels
  • Strengthens cooperation through frequent interaction and visibility with CCC employees in a non-union environment
  • Optimizes all forms of communication in CCC location, at all levels
  • Serves as a liaison between CCC and the community



  • Lead team of site based HR professionals
  • Effectively provides coaching for enhanced performance and competency; shares performance feedback both formally and informally
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required or requested


All employees are required to adhere to DEA, EPA, FDA and cGMP regulations as they relate to the operation of the Company; and to adhere to all company safety rules and procedures.  All employees are expected to report to work regularly and promptly.  Other duties relating to departmental mission, not specifically detailed in this section may be assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business, or related field and 7-10 years human resources experience
  • Demonstrated experience administering benefits, compensation, policy management, and employee development functions; previous experience leading a team preferred
  • Knowledge of state and federal employment laws relating to key areas of policy, benefits and HR
  • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail, including the ability to effectively handle multiple, concurrent projects and meet aggressive deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of sensitive and confidential issues
  • Demonstrated ability to influence all employee levels from frontline to senior leaders
  • Excellent ability to think proactively, anticipate business needs and draft possible solutions
  • Ability to multi-task with conflicting priorities in a pressured environment while still maintaining a customer-oriented demeanor
  • Self-directed and able to meet deadlines with professional, quality results
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office-Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint); ADP WorkForce Now experience helpful
