 At Cambrex Karlskoga we are dedicated to continual Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) improvements. We have chosen to certify our site according to ISO 14001 and we are committed to Responsible Care (which is the chemical industry's HSE initiative in Sweden, known as "Ansvar & Omsorg"). Issues concerning Health, Safety and Environment are integrated into every aspect of our day-to-day business activities. At Cambrex Karlskoga we work with complicated organic chemistry and handle a variety of chemicals. We responsibly address all associated hazards. |
Process safety before production
 Process safety is a priority at Cambrex Karlskoga. To prevent accidents we carry out sophisticated risk assessments of all chemicals and processes used at our plants. The risk assessments include technical risk analyses, chemical evaluation and thermo chemical analyses. The risk assessment results help us identify measures to be implemented to ensure safe operating conditions and minimize the impact on health or the environment. Employee participation is the key for success within Health, Safety & Environment. Continuous education for all of our employees is a major feature of our program. One activity is to annually arrange a Safety Day to confirm our Safety commitment. At the Safety day we shut down our plants to ensure participation of all employees and we focus on a specific safety theme, such as Preventive Maintenance work or our internal rescue plan. |
Environmental Permit
| As required by the Swedish Environmental Codes, certain operations must have the permission of the Environmental Court, the county administration or the municipality before commencing activities. The Environmental Court in Vänersborg governs our operations, and our supervisory authority is the county administration of Örebro. Cambrex Karlskoga’s operations are authorized by our environmental permit, which was granted in 1995 and renewed in 2003. Under the permit Cambrex Karlskoga is authorized to produce up to 16,000 metric tons of products per year. Each new substance is registered with the county administration before manufacture commences. The permit also specifies discharge limits for air and water and today we are well below these limits. |
Wastewater Treatment Plant
 The Company owns, operates and manages the wastewater treatment plant for the entire Björkborn Industrial Estate. Eurenco Bofors AB and other industries on the estate are co-financiers. The purpose of the wastewater treatment plant is to clean all process wastewater from the estate before it runs into Lake Möckeln. Sanitary effluent is piped to the municipal wastewater treatment plant and the surface water runs into the Timsälven River. Our wastewater treatment system is one of the most sophisticated in Sweden, since we treat a lot of different substances. We have invested 30 million SEK to improve the capability of the wastewater treatment plant. As a result, we have significantly reduced the Estate's discharges and, according to the assessments carried out, the condition of Lake Möckeln is greatly improved.

VOC catalytic combustion plant
 Our processes vent through a catalytic combustion plant which significantly decreases site VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions. The combustion plant was installed in 2000. VOC process emissions have decreased ever since then.
Continuous improvements
At Cambrex Karlskoga we have always worked to minimize negative impacts on the surroundings as a result of our operations and to improve the working environment for our employees. We have developed a systematic approach to manage these projects and have already made large investments for continued improvement. Distinct goals and action plans within the Health, Safety and Environment area ensure continuous improvement and decreased negative impact. Our long-term goals are:
- No employee will be injured due to our operations
- Ensure that our customers, neighbors and authorities maintain their confidence in our work regarding Health, Safety and Environment
- Through continuous improvement, minimize the environmental impact of our operations
- Comply with good margin the discharge limits set by the authorities
