In 1929, Dr. Joseph Salsbury, a veterinarian, founded Dr. Salsbury Laboratories to produce chemical-based products for parasite and disease control in poultry. The company was later expanded to include biological products for the animal health industry, i.e. vaccines. During the 1960's, the company started developing and marketing fine chemicals under the name Salsbury Chemicals, a division of Salsbury Laboratories. Salsbury Laboratories was later purchased by Solvay and CIE and renamed Solvay Animal Health, Inc.
In 1991, Cambrex Corporation acquired the chemical operations division of Solvay Animal Health, Inc. This new company was named Salsbury Chemicals, Inc. New warehouses, offices, research and development labs, as well as a new production facility have been added to the existing chemical production facilities and wastewater treatment plant. A new large-scale cGMP facility was recently completed to support the growth in pharmaceutical bulk actives and intermediates. Today, Cambrex Charles City, located on a 45-acre site in Charles City, Iowa, is known in the chemical industry as a manufacturer of specialty and pharmaceutical chemicals with a reputation for quality and performance. |
