Working at Cambrex Karlskoga

CURRENT OPENINGS

Cambrex Karlskoga is in the middle of an expansive phase and the number of employees has increased to 60 people over the last three years. We will continue to expand and hire new employees in the next few years.

The expansion has allowed us to offer varied and interesting opportunitites concentrating on Research & Development and Production.

Research & Development

Cambrex Karlskoga has a well-developed laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment and highly skilled staff, a number of whom have their Ph.D.. R&D work with new products is carried out in project form. The project group is comprised of a synthesitic chemist, an analytical chemist, a development engineer and a marketing manager. The job of the synthesis chemist is to find safe and effective synthesis methods for new products (active pharmaceutical substances and intermediates).

The processes are developed at lab-scale and the substances are typically scaled to kilo laboratory scale (50 L – 100 L). The synthetic chemist also assists in transferring the processes to the pilot and full-scale plants. Analytical development is carried out alongside synthesis development. Here the analytical chemist analyses tests from the Research & Development and Pilot departments, developing and validating analytical methods for raw materials, intermediates and end-products. We have a variety of high-tech analytical instruments such as NMR and MS to help with analysis of  the desired compounds. Safety assessments of the processes, studies of the environmental effects, and stability tests are also carried out in connection with the process research & development.

Production

The positions at hand are process engineers and process operators. The pilot-scale process engineers are responsible for and take part in projects for new products.  To a large extent this entails transferring processes from lab to pilot scale and from pilot to full-scale production. The remaining process engineers work primarily with product/process care, and manage analysis work and projects for investment, development and maintenance. The process operators take part in the manufacturing process itself. A knowledge of chemistry is required to be employed as a process operator. The process engineers work across a variety of shifts.

Healthcare and staff activities

At Cambrex Karlskoga we subsidize healthcare activities in order to encourage our employees to adopt an active, healthy lifestyle. These activities also play an important part in promoting contact between individuals and groups of employees in the company.

Final-year student posts

Cambrex Karlskoga offers excellent opportunities in our Karlskoga, Sweden facility for students working towards their final examinations. In recent years we have welcomed five to seven final-year students each year to work in production, the lab and our water treatment works. We are not able to offer many "ready-made" positions for these students, so instead we tailor a suitable post according to individual requirements. Some examples of the work carried out by final-year students at Cambrex Karlskoga are listed below.

  • Synthesis of chiral amines through enzymatic transformations
  • Developing analytical methods for specific products
  • Lab optimization for synthesis reactions
  • Surveying processes at the water treatment plant

Summer work experience

Each summer we have a number of work-experience opportunities to offer to university students concentrating on chemistry. Those students who need practical experience for their final examinations are given priority. The opportunities are primarily in production and our Research & Development laboratory. The production posts mainly entail working alongside a process operator to gain experience of how a chemical process industry works. We also have some temporary positions (summer replacement staff), but these require some experience. In the lab, we are also able to offer supervised work in research & development, the analytical laboratory, and quality control.
